In 1975 the mill of Bramald & Sons was gutted by fire. The mill ground flour and hound meal.
You could also hire the the grinding wheel and have your own grain ground. Newmillerdam
minus its mill was totally devoid of the essential feature of the village. There being a mill in the
village from the 13th C, being one of the mills owned by the Lord of the Manor, who was the only
person allowed to own a mill and therefore everyone had to pay the Lord for grinding of grain. Newmillerdam
being one of three Soke Mills in the area, the others being Wakefield and Horbury. The Soke was dissolved
in 1853 after the citizens of Wakefield purchased the rights. Picture from Elsie Walton
